an exploration of community & hUMANITY through creativity

CommuneCalla - a name dubbed on me by my roommate/sister/friend for the alter (possibly better) ego I would put on when painting. While I may have dreams of living on a vast piece of land with friends and family close by and perhaps a communal garden, the name CommuneCalla rings true because I believe in a communal existence and creative experience. Sharing ideas, trading solutions and inspirations, reaching out a hand to help others, and lifting each other up are all things that inspire me in life and art.

Creativity and Community

A forever goal of mine is to dive deeper and sink further into both, together.

Calla Michaelides Lokku is an Artist with an education and professional background in Fashion Design. Through her experience as a dancer and yoga practitioner, she is enamored with settling into the physical sensations of art making in order to escape the mind and meet the true self. Through hand dyeing and mixed media abstracts, Calla is currently experimenting with how to take techniques from the ever popular craft of Macramé and transform it into something her own. She can also be found experimenting with small, quick, color driven abstracts inspired solely by conversation with individuals. Calla’s work is largely collaborative in that the majority of her pieces are custom made for a specific person, family, home, and intention. Calla enjoys the creative dance between herself and collector- welcoming the challenges and new perspective each person brings. Ultimately, Calla intends to create a piece of work that makes the subject feel understood.

Having learned much about myself and the world through other people's art, I value and strive to contribute to the collective creative expression.

Through intimate compositions, we turn inward to connect with the self, and, in turn, the rest of humanity.

Limenitis arthemis

The Butterfly is quite universally known to represent transformation, growth, and rebirth. In many cultures the butterfly also represents eternal life and the soul itself. The Greek goddess, Psyche, meaning "soul" is always depicted with the wings of a butterfly. To the Christians, the butterfly is a symbol for rebirth and resurrection, a way to transform incredibly through life. For the Blackfeet Tribe, the butterfly was believed to be the deliverer of dreams. They would often embroider their children's blankets and clothing with butterflies to promote good dreams and restful sleep. Other Native American tribes also hold the butterfly in high regard, some believing they are direct messengers from the spirit world (Hi, Uncle Tom).

The butterfly is a great reminder in my work as a human being and artist, inspiring me to look inward, challenge my own limitations, and welcome transformation.

Yin & Yang

In ancient Chinese philosophy, the yin and yang symbolizes dualism and the relationship between seemingly opposite forces (dark & light, negative & positive, active & receptive). Yin and yang can be thought of as complementary, rather than opposing, forces that interact to form a dynamic system in which the whole is greater than the assembled parts. According to this philosophy, everything has both yin and yang aspects. For instance, shadow cannot exist without light.

"Yin and Yang are also the starting point for change. When something is whole, by definition, it’s unchanging and complete. So when you split something into two halves – yin/yang, it upsets the equilibrium of wholeness. Both halves are chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other…The nature of Yin and Yang flows and changes with time." — Personal Tao
